LOVE IS A VERB
The Big Green Lizard
Lessons from a Giant Green Iguana

Drawing of Clarence the Iguana from LOVE IS A VERB, a Fletcher Publishing Children's Book.

Lizardkind has no spoken tongue, and when I was born my name was not a sound. The only name I had was the look in my mother’s eye. Beautiful. A long look. To translate my name into your tongue would be Beautiful Faith Accomplishment Pride Holiness Covenant Immortality. But you can call me Clarence.

When I was born my mother gave me to Grand Mother. This is how it is with lizards. We belong to Grand Mother. She teaches us everything we need to know. She tells us what to eat and where to sleep. She tells us how to stay warm and how to swim. Even a human can hear Grand Mother speak if he listens very carefully.
